Win for Knockout Team

The knockout team needed only a draw against Woodpushers to win as we were outgraded on all but the top board. However wins for Ian Comley, Nick Warren, Ron Fletcher and Julie Denning secured a 4-1 victory. Things were not as straight forward as they sound as Ian's opponent blundered in the fast time limit and the only loss by Mick Harris was despite him unleashing a lovely tactic to win the exchange!

Captain Julie Denning writes:
"Christmas started early for an out-graded Horsham team that only needed a draw overall to go through on handicap. They meet the winner of Lewes 1 v The Argumentatives in the semi-final."

Comments

I'd selected a team based on that which Woodpushers had fielded in their previous match and which would have made us very similar in aggregate grading. However, this time they fielded a stronger team, and I promptly lost the toss, so it didn't look too promising. I didn't see much of the top 3 boards. Ron won quite quickly when his opponent blundered away a rook. My game went well into the quickplay finish period. Although I had a clearly winning position, I was grateful that my opponent resigned, rather than force me to prove it in the 5 minutes or so that remained. We go on to play either Lewes or The Args in the semi-final. This is due to be played before the end of February. We will be home if it's against Lewes, but away if against The Args.
