With an aggregate grading advantage of 78 points, Horsham needed at least 3½ on the night to proceed on handicap. The Args go through to meet Hastings & St Leonards in the final.

Roger Waddingham reports on last Tuesday's match between Horsham 5 and St Francis & Haywards Heath 3

The match was interesting. Matthew won easily on bottom board and then Tony lost, Matthew is now 5 / 5 in division three and must be headiing for some sort of league trophy.

All the other three games looked drawish for a while. Finally, Gary edged ahead in the endgame when he had his king on the correct side of the board to consume all his opponent's pawns.

Horsham 1 narrowly defeat Eastbourne 1

Horsham 1 achieved a narrow 3-2 victory over Eastbourne 1 in their match last night. Gavin Lock, Dix Roberts and Paul Taylor all won, but Phil Stimpson lost a safe-looking endgame, while James Mansson managed to blunder his queen against Oliver Froom.

Horsham 3 visited The Args last night and the match ended as a draw 2.5 – 2.5.

Horsham defeat Kent

The final result of the Sussex - Kent match last Saturday is not yet known. The score stands at 7.5-7.5, with the top board game unresolved. Feliks made a claim for a draw in the quickplay finish, and the matter is going for arbitration. However, whatever the result of the match overall, the Horsham players, competing at their home venue, did achieve a crushing 5-1 victory in their mini-match against their Kent counterparts. Just a quick note to remind parents that there is no junior chess tomorrow during half term. We are back next week as normal.

Horsham 1 on top against Hastings 1

Horsham 1 are poised to defeat Hastings 1 following a successful performance last Tuesday. The score was 2-1 on the night, with a result not agreed in the games Mansson - Howell and Almond - Higgs. In both cases Horsham has at least a draw. Subsequent examination of the final position in Mansson - Howell indicated that it was a book draw, but we still await a final verdict on Almond - Higgs.

The top board encounter Sugden - Lock saw Black adopt the Stonewall against White's passive line with e3, and he seemed to hold the draw easily enough.

Horsham 5 defeat Brighton 6

Horsham 5 defeated Brighton 6 away last Thursday by 3 points to 2.
