History made but Lewes prevail

A Horsham junior team made league history on Tuesday night but Lewes walked away with the spoils.

For the first time in Mid Sussex League history (checked with those who would know - Brian Denman and John Cannon) an all-female team was fielded in a league fixture. Horsham have always had a strong recent history of women and girl players - ECF and County stalwart Julie Denning, former British Women's Champion Amy Hoare, current Sussex Girls Champion & holder of the Anne Gammans Cup Lucy Bennet-Stevens, and others before - but never has a full female team been fielded in the league.

Our team was current junior champion Maya, sisters Eloise and Charlotte, and Darcey. All were outgraded by the strong Lewes junior team and eventually this strength was to tell, but all fought hard and made Lewes work for their wins. Charlotte in particular played very well on board 3 and was unlucky not to get something from a good position.

The girls were disappointed to lose the match but should be proud to be breaking the mould! Well done to all who played.
