A record turnout of Horsham club members took part this year, with some excellent success stories...
Top billing was Matthew Forster, who took the Sussex Under 14 title and a grading prize in the Major with a score of 3.5/5 (unbeaten) and a performance of 182. His win in round 2 against Paul Kelly of Hastings was particularly good - after about 10 moves White had moved only pawns and was completely lost...
Also scoring well in the Major were Paul Richardson (3/5 and a grading prize) and Bob Lanzer (2.5/5). In the Intermediate, Lucy Bennet-Stevens took joint 2nd place with 4/5, with Mark Baldock and Julie Denning both scoring 3/5, Dave Britton on 2.5/5 and Zevon Rustom on 2/5. Your correspondent managed 1.5/5 in the Open.
Other Sussex luminaries also did well, particularly David Fryer of Crowborough who scored 3.5/5 in the Open with a grading performance of 220. The Open was won by GM Pert and IM Sarakauskas with 4.5/5. All overseen by Mike Forster in the arbiter's chair!
