Horsham 1 suffer narrow defeat against Worthing 1

A couple of weeks ago, Horsham 1 were up against a strong Worthing 1 team at home. Worthing 1 had their strongest side out, while Horsham 1 were a couple of players short.

Worthing managed to win on the top two boards, so a win and draw on the lower boards were not enough for Horsham.

Gavin Lock seemed to be doing well against Russell Granat with Black, but his position then went downhill and he lost.

Mark Broom was struggling from early on against David Graham, losing a pawn and seeing his structure compromised. He fought on manfully but was unable to avoid defeat.

James Mansson achieved a balanced endgame out of the opening, but as he started to run short of time, he made some mistakes and ended up in a lost position; however, his opponent returned the favour with a couple of errors, and he was able to hold the draw.

Anthony Higgs managed to bamboozle Chris Jones in a wild game; in a complex position, the latter managed to blunder his queen and promptly resigned.

The above meant that the final score was 2.5-1.5 in favour of Worthing 1.
