On Friday the juniors played their first match of the season, and despite a brave showing the strength in depth of Crowborough shone through...
Crowborough were noticeably stronger on paper on boards 2-4, although all three Horsham players put up good fights. All three of them eventually missed tactics or threats that picked up material, after which the Crowborough players swapped down to won positions. Well done to Harry, Campbell and Kyle for fighting hard against tough opposition.
It was a different story on board 1, where Paul held his strong opponent Henry to a fairly even game all the way through. A draw would have been the fair result for both players, but chess is an unforgiving game sometimes and by making one mistake in the king and pawn endgame Paul found himself lost. A shame for him but a great showing against a skilled opponent.
