It was the last club of the season last night (26 June) with a number of competitions being resolved. While some of us travelled to Lewes for the Mid Sussex Chess League AGM some serious chess was under way.
Firstly the juniors had an award ceremony with a host of promising juniors vying for the Peter Alford cup.
The eventual winner was Ben Crosby who narrowly pipped a number of contenders including Peter Crosby , his twin brother and a runner up. Ben also wins the ladder competition this year so there is some silverware heading for the Crosby household.
In the adult club there were a number of games. For the third evening Mike Forster and James Mansson tussled to resolve the Knockout Final. By now they were down to the quickplay tie breaker and there were a couple of interesting games with Mike winning the day and the Knockout cup. There was also a Rook game in progress between Alex Taylor and Lucy Bennett-Stevens where Alex pressed hard with a kingside attack with a piece sacrifice. Lucy defended well and eventually turned the tables to take victory and an excellent season where she was one of the serious chasers for the Rook competition.
James Mansson was the worthy winner of the Rook competition which he dominated from beginning to end. He fought off serious challenges from a number of players including Lucy and Anthony and is beginning to become the default winner of the Rook!
