Horsham 4 pick up a great away win vs Worthing 3

I’d like to start by thanking John Marshall for his commitment to get to our Worthing match last night, after train delays to his morning commute he was faced by several more delays in the evening but still managed to make the venue just in time. Unfortunately even after knocking out the first 20 moves quickly he was still very much down on time which gave his opponent enough of an edge to take the game away from him.

Melusi’s game was also moving quickly however he had built a very strong attacking position with which he was able to tactically control and win his game, 1 all.

So Near, Yet So Far

Mark Baldock submitted the following report on the recent Horsham 5 vs Horsham 4 match.

Earlier this week saw the first fixture in Division 3 of the Mid-Sussex League. And what a fixture! A keenly competitive match between Horsham 4 and the new newly promoted Horsham 5. The latter faced an average deficit of 20 grading points on each board and, as the home team, played black on 3 out of 5 boards. But did this didn’t curb the enthusiasm and fighting sprit of the home team? No it didn’t as they ground out 4 very solid draws on Boards 2 to 5 and were just edged out on Board 1 right at the death.

Horsham 4th team secured their position in the 3rd division on Tuesday with a great victory over Brighton & Hove 5.

We had a rather strange start to the night with one of the opposition arriving on time with the message that their top board player would be racing over from Brighton to play. Thankfully the other team members arrived at 7.45 and we were able to being on boards 2-5.

Horsham 4th vs Uckfield 1st

Last Wednesday we headed over to Uckfield to face their 1st team which was always going to be much tougher than their 2nd.

Horsham 4 vs Uckfield 2 - 5-0!

Unfortunately Uckfield were not able to field a full team for this match which gave us a 2 game lead but we still needed at least the one game, you never know...

Horsham 4th vs Crowborough 2nd

Facing a very strong Crowborough 2nd team with an 88 point advantage our guys faced a tough challenge indeed (I hid a few tables away!).

Horsham 4th vs Woodpushers 1st - 2-3 loss

On a very wet Wednesday evening the Horsham 4th headed over to Hove to face Woodpushers 1st, our team Bob Lanzer, Melusi, Julie, Roger Waddingham and myself were out graded on nearly every board but I was still hopeful for a good result.

Horsham 4 beat Eastbourne 2

Horsham 4 have done a great job of defeating Eastbourne 2 3-2 ...well done to them especially on a wet and windy Friday night !

Horsham 4 lose to East Grinstead 2 in a night of blunders

Dave Britton reports:

The first blunder was from me as once again we had white on evens,

Jon lost the exchange and soon after the game in a queens Indian with neither player castling, Julie had time trouble and missed the opportunity to equalise with RxR+ before Norman exchanged the last pair of Rooks and gained a piece. Gary got his bishop trapped in a difficult position while in my game Bob allowed me to fork both Knights with Queen by move 11 in a Sicilian-French
