Last Wednesday we headed over to Uckfield to face their 1st team which was always going to be much tougher than their 2nd.
I had a great start on board 2 coming out of the opening as black with strong attack on white’s king which was unusually castled queen side against the Scandinavian. Sadly all the minor pieces came off leaving opposite coloured bishops and a draw was agreed.
Dave was next to finish after a overwhelming opening attack which left him a rook up he carefully kept control and finished the job. Sometime later Gary was left with a theoretically drawn position with a bishop vs knight & pawn and his king behind but much to his frustration and repeated draw offers his opponent had nothing to lose and managed to get through.
Tim meanwhile was in great control of his game on board 1 with a better pawn structure he slowly built pressure masterfully gaining space and eventually a piece and forced a pawn through for a victory.
All eyes now turned to Julie’s game on board 4, time was running out fast for her and being the exchange down it was always going to be tough. Although she managed to make the time control she finally had to take a big risk and sacrifice a piece just as time was called, sadly after looking more closely the next day the position was lost and she resigned the game. Final result was a great draw which hopefully might be enough to keep us up with two games left to play.
