Tuesday was the second of the three Horsham vs Horsham matches to start this season. Last match the 3s suffered playing up against the 2s and this time played down against the 4s. Although we outrated our opponents on every board, it's still never a guaranteed result.
First to finish was my own board 1, a repeat fixture from the previous week against John M but with colours reversed. We played a very quiet Spanish where suddenly it wasn't and black resigned under threat of mate.

I have been very lax in not posting on the progress of the 4th team as the season progresses. Our 4 - 0 thrashing of our luckless Eastbourne opponents last night has spurred me into action.
The season opener intra-club match had Roger's 5th team hold us to a draw. We then had a long break till past mid-November when we hosted East Grinstead Bookshop 2 (but following problems fielding teams, now their only team in the League) and we notched up our first win, by the margin of 3 - 1.

We started with an away match against the one Sussex Uni team and were wondering which of their previous two teams' worth of members would turn up. It was a mixed bag as it turned out. On board 1, Julie scored a fantastic draw against a player graded 70 points higher than her. Meanwhile, the next three of our team regulars all managed to shed material unnecessarily and lose against slightly weaker opposition. Our new member, Guy Turvey, played a solid game to achieve a deserved victory on board 5, giving the final result some respectability for our team (1.5 - 3.5).

Horsham 4 saw a pretty comprehensive victory tonight against East Grinstead with good wins for Zevon, Richard and John with Julie and Nick drawing. In contrast Horsham 2 started the evening with a default on bottom board and Lucy played an excellent game on board 4. But Phil lost to an impressive Ian Kelly and Dix's strong attack didnt quite pay off and finally Anthony missed a tactic in a strong position. So Woodpushers won despite their default.
In the Rook James beat Paul Taylor to return to winning form.

Horsham 4 pulled off a comprehensive victory last night beating Eastbourne 3 4.5-0.5. Some fine chess all round confirms their position as third in the fourth division.
Meanwhile in the committee room Horsham 2 were having a tougher evening playing Hastings 2. Paul Taylor managed a draw but Peter Harbott lost and Anthony Higgs drew an adjourned game against a 210 player. Unfortunately both Phil Stimpson and Dix Roberts both lost despite Dix having a threatening outside passed pawn.
