The Horsham Knockout team have reached the knockout final for the second year in succession after a 2.5-2 win over Crowborough in the semi-final. The match was a tight affair with the teams fairly close on grading, Horsham conceding only a half point handicap with 2.5 points required for the win.

The KO competition doesn't manage to attract a large entry, although Horsham have consistently taken part for many years. This season there were 6 entrants, including 2 teams from Crowborough. Our first match was due to be against Crowborough 2, but their club was laid low by covid and they conceded the the match. We then faced a semi-final match against Sussex University. Knowing they had a potentially strong line up of players this season, we confronted them with a strong team, including Mark Broom and James Mansson.

The Horsham KO team began, and ended, its 2018 / 19 campaign with an away match against Sussex University last night (3rd December). Robert drew on board 5 against an opponent 32 points his junior. Alas, that was the high point of the evening for us.

Our MSL Knock-Out team played its first match of the season last night (5th December). Our opponents were Lewes 1 - they've entered 2 KO teams. Being their first team, it was anticipated that they might come in strength, although this is always a bit of guesswork until you see who turns up on the night. We therefore countered with a team based more on strength than possible handicap advantage. In the event, Lewes were missing some of their top players and were significantly the weaker side on paper.
Tidying up the official record with the scorecard of a match I missed back in December...
A pleasant evening at The Args ended with victory for Horsham, but by a narrower margin than the score suggests...

The MSL KO team played their first match of the season against Brighton & Hove on Wednesday. The teams were very closely matched in terms of aggregate grading, so no handicap applied. Paul Richardson and Brian Howard were losers in the first 2 games to finish, but Anthony Higgs then won on top board. I had knight and pawn for a rook, but felt I had some positional compensation for the slight material deficit. However, with time running out for each of us in the mandatory QPF of the KO competition, neither of us could establish a clear advantage and we agreed a draw.
Last night saw Horsham's Mid-Sussex Knockout team go out in the first round against Haywards Heath by the narrowest possible margin...
