The 2nd team welcomed Division 2 league leaders, Crowborough 1, on Tuesday 5th December. Horsham lead 2½-1½ with one game being sent for adjudication, in which we are claiming a win and they are claiming a draw, so a 3-2 win is at least guaranteed, in what was a tight match.
Phil was the first to win on Board 4 – playing the Blumenfeld Attack in the Scotch Opening – a line he was very familiar with having won previously with the following sequence of moves!!
I was busy playing a fascinating Rook game against Nick on Tuesday. We had a good strategic struggle where I went a pawn down but we ended in a draw.It was a fascinating game so feel free to correct me if I report wrongly on your game!
In Horsham 2 v Crowborough on Tuesday, Morgan Blake was facing David Fryer and Black had just taken his Rook.
No doubt David expected simply BxB but Morgan demonstrated fantastic attacking style in this position and shortly won...solution in the comments
I was leafing through AAH this Saturday and saw a picture with Horsham Bridge Society. I seemed to remember that Peter Harbott played there .. but it seems that Rogar Waddingham does too!
Congratulations to the Bridge club on their anniversary.
Horsham's junior club champion Maya McMahon was joint winner of the Sussex U11 girls title at the weekend with 4.5/5, including a final round win against the 4/4 leader...
All four teams have played three matches and there has been a MSL Knockout match as well. As we have had the last matches before Christmas I thought you might be interested in the players with the top performance in all matches. I have listed all players with over 50%.

Our MSL Knock-Out team played its first match of the season last night (5th December). Our opponents were Lewes 1 - they've entered 2 KO teams. Being their first team, it was anticipated that they might come in strength, although this is always a bit of guesswork until you see who turns up on the night. We therefore countered with a team based more on strength than possible handicap advantage. In the event, Lewes were missing some of their top players and were significantly the weaker side on paper.
Another packed week with a double match and another six games going on.
I was a bit preoccupied with my own match so not sure I saw all the matches. Alex Taylor played Mike Forster in the quickplay and Mike won the day and is now due to play Paul Taylor. Also in the quickplay Richard Barrowclough managed to beat Mick Harris in a typically good humoured game to reach the final of the Plate. Don't forget that the Quickplay is scheduled for 19 December.
Horsham 4 played against an entire team of Juniors at Worthing last Monday...
