Junior chess returns (for a week!)

The junior club returns after the Easter break this coming Tuesday 14th April. Only for one week though, as I am away the week after so there will be no junior club on the 21st. Normal service is resumed from the 28th onward.

Paul Watson Trophy Exit

Horsham welcomed Lewes on Tuesday 7th April in the semi-final of the Paul Watson Trophy. This competition requires each team of 4 players to have an average (start of season) grading of 150. The two teams were evenly matched with Horsham’s average 149 against Lewes’s 147.

BRIGHTON ROCK(ed) -- by Horsham 3 !!

Time and tide wait for no man....
A trip to Hove for a crunch match, provided a sensational evening. This was the final match of the season for Brighton 2. With 6.5 points from 7 games, a win would see them become League champions with promotion to Division 1 as the prize.
Horsham 3,unbeaten with 5/5, were warmly welcomed,as familiar faces settled down to battle it out. Brighton significantly out-graded Horsham on every board (see teams below).
Mick tried a sacrificial attack, but excellent defence trapped his queen - and Horsham were 1 down.

Heroic Horsham 2 hold Hastings 1

A superb result deserves some mighty fine alliteration...

Two seconds from success...

Horsham 2's away fixture vs Eastbourne 1 on 6th March ended in a narrow loss, two seconds being the exact margin of defeat...

Top of the table clash in Division 1

Sadly Horsham 1 came off worse in what could be a crucial result in the title race last Monday...

Horsham 3 ease to victory against Lewes 2

Horsham 3 had a 4.5 -- 0.5 win against Lewes 2 last Tuesday. Admittedly we had a grading advantage on all boards, but the team played well and secured our 5th win of the season.
We have a tough run-in of games to come, but we have secured our position in Division 2.
Individual results are:
(159) Tim Pavlovic 1 - 0 A Mitchell (140)
(153) Chris Heath 1 - 0 M Britnell (137)
(150) Bob Lanzer 1 - 0 M Davies-Arai (135)
(150) Nick Warren draw D Badham (132)
(146) John Marshall 1 - 0 A Mayer (120)

Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics

Now that Horsham 5’s 2014/15 season has finished I thought it would be useful to provide a (light-hearted!?) end of term report in advance of Ian’s wider presentation to the AGM in September.

We played 7 matches of which we won 3, lost 3 and drew 1.

We used 10 players who played a total of 34 games (excluding 1 default). Of these we won 13, lost 11 (including 1 default) and drew 11 – giving us a win percentage of 37.14%.

If you are in a space ship…

…. travelling at the speed of light and you turn on the headlights, does anything happen?

It is amazing what things crowded into my mind during yesterday evening's 3 hour round trip to Hastings to play our last match in Division 3 this season against their fourth team.

Horsham 2 off the mark against Lewes 1

Match points have been hard to come by this season for Horsham 2, but we chalked up our first win of the season against Lewes 1 last Tuesday...
