Horsham defeat St Francis and Haywards Heath in the Paul Watson Trophy

Mick Harris reports:

Horsham had an excellent win over St Francis & Haywards Heath in the semi final of the Paul Watson Cup.
Despite some manoeuvring with grades by the opponents we went through with good wins from Richard Moorhouse, Nick Warren and Mick Harris.
We will play either Lewes or Hastings in the final.

The results of the individual games are given in the table below:

Season's Greetings

Girl plays chess with cat

A great evening of chess last Tuesday with 3 semifinalists safely in place and lots of mince pies consumed.

That is our final club meeting of the year and we will all meet again on Tuesday 8 January 2013 when Horsham 2 will be playing Worthing 1 and Horsham 5 take on Uckfield 2. I am only aware of Chris Heath playing at Hastings but I am sure there must be more! Keep an eye on the website for any updates over the xmas break.

I hope you all have a great Christmas and offer you some seasonal good will:

Live Chess Games

I was looking to watch the live games from the Mind Games competition and came across this great site. It seems to show live games from around the world.

Win for Knockout Team

The knockout team needed only a draw against Woodpushers to win as we were outgraded on all but the top board. However wins for Ian Comley, Nick Warren, Ron Fletcher and Julie Denning secured a 4-1 victory. Things were not as straight forward as they sound as Ian's opponent blundered in the fast time limit and the only loss by Mick Harris was despite him unleashing a lovely tactic to win the exchange!

Anthony Higgs wins against Luke Rutherford

Anthony Higgs scored a good win against Brighton's board one, Luke Rutherford, in the recent Horsham 2 match against Brighton 1. The game is given below, with some notes by Anthony.

Visit to London Chess Classic

Anthony Higgs, Mark Baldock, John Marshall, Paul Kington and I met up at today's London Chess Classic to watch Mickey Adams beat the world champion - it is well worth a visit and there were many other MSL players there too.

Horsham 2 lose to Brighton 1

From the Mid Sussex League website:

Board 2 is adjourned. A predictable win for Brighton & Hove 1 who greatly out-gunned their visitors, but a noteworthy win for Anthony Higgs over Luke Rutherford on board 1.

Anthony supplied the following report:

Horsham 4 defeat Brighton 6

Dave Britton reports:

A good result on the night, I didn't get a chance to look at all the games as I had a disastrous opening with black but managed to produce a 5 move forced checkmate with rook, bishop & knight. Julie got a bishop up in the endgame when opponent resigned which secured us the win.

Half way through the season and still on schedule for the top 4 finish I'm hoping for so Horsham 4 can stay in the 3rd Division next season when it splits into 4 Divisions.

Horsham 5 lose away to St Francis 2

Horsham 5 lost away to St Francis & Haywards Heath 2 on the 22nd November by the decisive margin of 4-1.

The results of the individual games are given in the table below:

What a game!

Fantastic game at the London Chess Classic!

Two queens and an under promotion...well worth a look.
